About Us

Authoritative research sponsored by the Foundation for Community Association Research supports the aspirations of the more than 74 million Americans who live and work in an estimated 358,000 U.S. community associations. Our mission — with your support — is to provide research-based information for homeowners, association board members, community managers, developers and others. Since the Foundation’s inception in 1975, we’ve built a solid reputation for producing accurate, insightful and timely information and produce:

  • Sponsor needs-based research to help community association stakeholders address specific challenges and prepare for emerging issues.
  • Publish best practices reports on critical topics like energy efficiency, governance, financial operations and strategic planning.
  • Provide research scholarships for graduate students.
  • Collect historical data on the development, operation and management of common-interest communities, including surveys analyzing homeowner satisfaction and community manager compensation.

In short, our work supports homeowner volunteer leaders and industry professionals who share a stake in the success of common-interest communities.

In addition, the Foundation supports Community Associations Institute (CAI), a national organization dedicated to fostering vibrant, competent, harmonious community associations. For more than 40 years, CAI has been the leader in providing education and resources to the volunteer homeowners who govern community associations and the professionals who support them. CAI members include community association volunteer leaders, professional managers, community management firms, and other professionals and companies that provide products and services to associations. There are close to 350,000 community associations across the country, reflecting the growth of community-based solutions to modern housing problems.

The Foundation is led by a 16-member Board of Directors. The Board is made up of dedicated volunteers who give their time and expertise to making the Foundation a leader in community association research and development. Learn more about the Foundation’s leaders.
